In the Canadian Rockies, location and light shape every photograph. The mountains can feel dramatically different depending on the season, elevation, and time of day.
This guide walks through the locations we photograph most often, along with how they tend to look throughout the year. It is designed to help you choose both the setting and timing that will best complement the scenery you love and the experience you’re hoping to create.
Two Jack Lake
Two Jack Lake sits just beside Lake Minnewanka and offers equally stunning views of towering peaks and sweeping mountain landscapes. While slightly smaller in scale, it showcases the same dramatic scenery that makes this area of Banff National Park so memorable.
Two Jack is also known for its famously glassy water. On calm mornings, the lake often becomes a perfect mirror, creating beautiful reflections of the surrounding mountains, particularly at sunrise.
Like nearby Lake Minnewanka, the lake typically freezes during the winter months and begins to thaw in spring, offering a different but equally striking landscape throughout the year. From crisp winter scenes to bright summer mornings and golden autumn evenings, Two Jack Lake remains one of the most versatile and beautiful locations for photos in the Banff area.
Bow Lake
Bow Lake sits along the Icefields Parkway and offers sweeping alpine views framed by towering peaks and glaciers. Its dramatic setting creates a striking and expansive landscape, perfect for capturing the scale and beauty of the Canadian Rockies.
Because of its higher elevation, Bow Lake often retains snow into late spring, and temperatures can remain cooler than locations closer to Banff. By summer, the glacier-fed waters reflect the surrounding mountains in vivid shades of blue, creating a truly iconic backdrop.
Sunrise and early morning sessions often offer calm waters with subtle reflections, while evenings bring clear, crisp light that emphasizes the rugged alpine terrain. Bow Lake’s combination of remoteness, dramatic scenery, and accessibility makes it a favourite for clients seeking a striking, memorable mountain setting.
Peyto Lake
Peyto Lake offers one of the most dramatic viewpoints in the Canadian Rockies. Perched high above the valley, the overlook reveals the lake’s striking wolf-head shape and vibrant glacial blue colour, surrounded by sweeping mountain ridges and dense alpine forest.
Reaching the viewpoint involves a short but steady hike of about 30 minutes along a mountain trail. The path gradually climbs to the overlook, where steep cliffside views open to one of the most breathtaking panoramas along the Icefields Parkway.
Because of its elevation and northern location, Peyto Lake typically holds onto winter conditions longer than areas closer to Banff. Snow can remain well into spring, while summer and early fall bring clear alpine views and the lake’s famous turquoise colour.
For those willing to make the short hike, Peyto Lake offers one of the most unforgettable vantage points in the Canadian Rockies.
Moraine Lake
Moraine Lake is one of the most iconic and recognizable landscapes in the Canadian Rockies. Surrounded by the towering peaks of the Valley of the Ten Peaks, its vibrant turquoise water and dramatic alpine setting create one of the most breathtaking backdrops in Banff National Park.
Due to its location, Moraine Lake is only accessible from June through early October, when the road to the lake is open for the season. During this time, the surrounding landscape features bright glacial water, rugged peaks, and sweeping alpine views that make it one of the most sought-after locations in the Rockies.
Private vehicles are no longer permitted on the Moraine Lake road, so access requires a shuttle reservation. For sessions here, clients will need to book shuttle seats for themselves as well as two additional seats for us as the photographers. Please also note that because of shuttle times, Moraine Lake session times often differ from other locations.
Signature Photo Locations: Available June through October
Our signature session locations take you deeper into the Canadian Rockies, where dramatic alpine landscapes and iconic turquoise lakes create some of the most breathtaking scenery in the region.
Because these locations sit farther north and at higher elevations, they are most accessible from June through October, when mountain roads are clear and the lakes have fully thawed. During these months, the scenery is especially striking, with vibrant glacial water, towering peaks, and expansive views along the Icefields Parkway.
These locations are ideal for those who want to experience some of the most iconic landscapes in the Rockies while creating photographs that feel both timeless and unforgettable.
Lake Minnewanka
With its sweeping mountain views and expansive shoreline, Lake Minnewanka offers beautiful scenery throughout every season in Banff National Park. The scale of the lake creates an open, dramatic landscape that photographs beautifully year-round.
From late December through early May, the lake is typically frozen, creating a striking winter setting framed by snow-covered peaks. As the ice melts in spring and summer arrives, the shoreline opens to wide views across the water toward the surrounding mountains.
Because of its size and open water, Lake Minnewanka can experience windier conditions at times. Sunrise sessions often include a soft haze settling over the mountains, creating a dreamy, atmospheric look. In the evening, the light tends to be clearer and more defined, giving the scenery a crisp, almost high-definition feel.
No matter the time of year, Lake Minnewanka remains one of our top choices. It’s a favourite among many of our couples and a personal favourite of ours as well.
Lake Louise
Lake Louise is one of the most iconic landscapes in the Canadian Rockies, known for its towering peaks, glacier-fed turquoise water, and dramatic alpine setting. Surrounded by steep mountains and the Victoria Glacier, it offers a striking backdrop in every season.
From late fall through late spring, the lake is typically frozen and covered in snow, creating a serene winter landscape framed by snow-covered mountains. As temperatures warm in late spring and early summer, the ice begins to melt and the lake gradually returns to its famous turquoise colour.
Because Lake Louise sits at a higher elevation than many other locations in Banff National Park, winter conditions often linger longer here and early snowfall in the fall is not uncommon. This gives the area a distinctly alpine feel throughout much of the year.
With its dramatic scenery and world-famous setting, Lake Louise is a beautiful choice in any season and offers one of the most recognizable landscapes in the Canadian Rockies.
Classic Photo Locations: Available Year Round
Our classic session locations are available year-round and offer some of the most beautiful and accessible landscapes in Banff National Park. Each provides sweeping mountain views and iconic alpine scenery, while remaining relatively close to town and easy to reach throughout the seasons.
Because these locations sit at slightly lower elevations than many areas further north, they often transition through the seasons earlier in spring and later into fall. This makes them especially reliable options when planning sessions during the shoulder months.
Below you’ll find a closer look at each location, along with what to expect throughout the year and at different times of day.
